Used-car appraisal app for Alberta dealerships

Appraise for Dealers is an appraisal app built for Alberta’s used-car market. It prices trade-ins from nearby Alberta dealer listings first, flags check-engine codes cleared before the appraisal, and checks for the damage Alberta winters cause: road salt, gravel chips, hail and deep cold. Recon, fees and gross come from your own settings, so the max buy fits how your store works.

Key facts

  • GST onlyAlberta has no PST, so the trade-in tax credit is the 5% GST on the trade value.
  • AMVIC and the MFADealers are licensed by AMVIC and provide a Mechanical Fitness Assessment when retailing used vehicles.
  • Out-of-province unitsVehicles from outside Alberta need an out-of-province inspection before registration.
  • No emissions testingNothing at registration checks readiness monitors, so the appraisal has to.
  • Alberta-first compsWithin your search range (300 km by default), then Alberta, then Canada adjusted to Alberta.
  • Built in CanadaPrices in CAD, distances in km, data hosted in Canada.
Value

How does Appraise price used cars for Alberta?

Prices for the same model differ between provinces. Appraise starts from your own market and tells you how far it had to look.

Every value starts with comparable Canadian dealer listings: same trim, similar km, within your search range (300 km of your rooftop by default; 160 or 500 km if you prefer). If there aren’t enough, the search widens to Alberta, then to Canada with prices adjusted to Alberta, and the value says which. Recently sold listings count ahead of asking prices when there are at least three.

A region line shows how the Alberta price compares with the national market, and a mileage line compares the car’s km with a typical 20,000 km a year for its age. From there you get four wholesale grades, Extra clean to Rough, and your own max buy, built from your recon, auction fee, transport, pack, holding cost and target gross.

See how the grades are built on the wholesale value tool page, or the math behind the max buy in our max buy guide.

Rules of the road

What Alberta rules affect a trade-in appraisal?

A few provincial rules change what a trade-in will cost you before it can be retailed.

  • Dealer licensing. The Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC) licenses dealers and salespeople and enforces the province’s automotive consumer rules.
  • Mechanical Fitness Assessment. Alberta dealers provide a completed MFA when they retail a used vehicle. Whatever it will need belongs in your recon estimate on day one.
  • All-in pricing. Alberta dealer ads must show a price that includes fees other than GST, which makes local dealer listings cleaner retail comparables.
  • Out-of-province vehicles. A car previously registered elsewhere needs an out-of-province inspection before it can be registered in Alberta, so add it when you buy from BC, Saskatchewan or the US.
  • Liens. Search Alberta’s Personal Property Registry and handle any payout on the bill of sale.
  • Tax. Only the 5% GST applies, and it is generally charged after a trade-in is deducted, which is worth $1,000 to a customer on a $20,000 trade.
  • No emissions testing. Alberta has no routine emissions test for passenger vehicles, so nothing catches a check-engine light cleared before a sale. Here’s how to catch it yourself.

Across the province

How do conditions change across Alberta?

One province, several very different climates and kinds of work. Each leaves its own marks on a trade-in.

Calgary and the south

Chinook freeze-thaw cycles keep the underbody wet with salty slush, and the area is one of Canada’s worst for hail.

Appraising in Calgary

Edmonton and the north

Longer, colder winters, salt that sits for weeks between melts, and trucks that have worked in the north.

Appraising in Edmonton

Central Alberta

Red Deer and the Highway 2 corridor: lots of highway km, rock chips and a share of the hail belt.

Oil and gas country

Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie and Lloydminster: work trucks with gravel-road km, packed mud, upfits and heavy idle hours.

The southeast

Lethbridge and Medicine Hat: strong wind and sun mean faded paint, cracked dashboards and pitted glass.

The mountain corridor

Canmore and the Bow Valley: steep grades work brakes, transmissions and cooling systems hard.

Fraud flags

Why do Alberta appraisers need an OBD scan on every car?

With no emissions testing at registration, a cleared check-engine light can travel from owner to owner. A Bluetooth reader and Appraise show what a quick clear leaves behind.

  • Permanent codes a scan tool can’t erase
  • Km, warm-ups and minutes since the clear
  • Readiness monitors not ready, listed by name
  • Repair estimates from book hours at your labour rate

Does Appraise work across Canada?

Yes. Appraise works for dealerships anywhere in Alberta and in every other province. Comps come from the live Canadian market near each dealer’s rooftop, so a store in Grande Prairie and a store in Lethbridge each see their own market.

Does Appraise complete the Mechanical Fitness Assessment?

No. The MFA has to be completed by a qualified technician. Appraise helps you estimate what the car will need to pass, so that cost is in your offer from the start.

Are values in Canadian dollars?

Yes. Every price is in CAD and every distance in km, from Canadian listings.

Where is our data stored?

In Canada (Montréal). Each dealership sees only its own data, and we never sell it. See the privacy policy.
